Personal Finance Resources Updates

Although we’re still using our own customized excel templates for our family financials, I researched a few more that I wanted to comment on:

// Vertex42 //

Website: https://www.vertex42.com/

Comments: Still using this for summarized financials, but it’s primarily US based. Can be useful if it’s for general usage only.

// YNAB //

Website: https://aus.youneedabudget.com/

Comments: It’s good if you need it for Personal Finance. However, it’s a monthly subscription model approach.

// Frollo //

Website: https://frollo.com.au/

Comments: Money Management Platform. Grouping categories for personal use seems to be an outstanding issue. Budgeting to own personal categories seems to be non-existent.

// Actual Budget //

Website: https://actualbudget.com/

Comments: Closing their hosting server on NOV24 and will be open-sourced to the community. I can understand that project turned out to become more complex than expected and no longer worth the effort to keep it updated.

// Aspire Budget //

Website: https://aspirebudget.com/

Comments: This reddit thread summarized it pretty well. https://www.reddit.com/r/ynab/comments/jyxgln/aspire_budget_for_a_spreadsheet_its_nice_but_not/

// Making Your Money Matter //

Website 1: https://www.makingyourmoneymatter.com/

Website 2: https://www.whitecoatinvestor.com/

Comments:

Website 1: An Accountant selling Excel templates as a one-time fee. I’ve looked at their Youtube videos and they’re quite informational when it comes to providing instructions on how to integrate existing personal finance websites and populating/mapping their data with their provided excel template. Even myself no longer have the patience for that. Actual vs Budget is fine as I used to report to the CFOs and MDs for Financial Reporting, but it’s too cumbersome for Personal Finance, especially if it has to be updated monthly.

Website 2: A physician offering courses for future physicians to do their personal finances. That’s interesting. The costs on the other hand, seems pricey. Nowadays, you can find plenty of personal finance information for free online.
